Data Recovery FAQ

  1. How much does it cost?
  2. Will all my documents be restored?
  3. What happens if you aren't able to recover anything?
1. How much does it cost?

On-site recovery $99 (non-destructive)

We can non-destructively determine whether there is useful data to recover and how much time and effort it will take to recover it.  Disks with minimal damage can be recovered "on-site".

Laboratory recovery (destructive)

Physically damaged disks may have to be sent to our lab for further testing and evaluation.  The cost is $99 for the evaluation and labor estimates will be given on a case-by-case basis.

Will all my documents be restored?

In most cases, yes.  Here are some things you can do to minimize data loss:

If you accidentally deleted an important file or files and they do not show up in the recycle bin:
Remove the power and bring the computer to us at once!
New data (including the Windows swap file) WILL overwrite old data.
Don't do anything that could write new data to the disk.
Do not install or save anything new to the hard disk.
Rebooting can overwrite files.
Do not re-install windows.  This will definitely overwrite files!
System restore usually doesn't work on documents, unless you set it up that way beforehand!
Do not run scandisk, defrag or other disk utilities.  They can overwrite and corrupt data.
We will mount your drive "read-only" and recover the data non-destructively.

If you suspect your drive has crashed or it "won't boot"
Call for consultation.  We can walk you through the process of testing your drive or repairing the boot loader.  If it tests out bad you can either send it to us or install it in a computer that is connected to the internet.  We can recover the data remotely.

If you accidentally formatted your disk, ran fdisk or some other disk tool and it will not boot.
Either send the drive to us or install it in any computer that is connected to the internet.

If Windows has started acting "funny" and you just want to do a system restore:
Back up your documents to another disk, CD or DVD.  System restore may destroy them!
Run system restore and choose a date when it was working well.  Reboot.
Restore documents from backup.  If you have any doubts, send it to us.

What happens if you aren't able to recover anything?

We guarantee you will be satisfied with our service.  If we don't recover anything, you aren't obligated to pay.  We usually do not sell parts but, when we do, they are covered by their manufacturer's warrrantees. Used parts are usually sold "as-is" unless otherwise specified.
